Saber Astronautics has unveiled Saber Commander, a new software platform designed for spacecraft and satellite constellation operations.

The platform builds on the company’s Predictive Ground station Interface (PIGI), which was developed in 2010 and released in 2012. PIGI became known in the space industry for pioneering the use of digital twin technology and was the first product to successfully use machine learning to diagnose spacecraft health issues and identify root causes. The technology later contributed to the development of Saber’s Space Battle Management System, which is used by US Space Force Combat Command Deltas.

Saber Astronautics Chief Executive Officer Dr Jason Held said Saber Commander builds on PIGI’s original goal of making satellite operations easier and safer.

“PIGI was about reducing the barrier to entry to satellites, making it easier and safer to fly,” Dr Held said.

“Saber Commander carries that heritage forward, with new automation, visualisation, and operational scale that modern satellite constellations require.”

The new platform was developed in collaboration with Saber’s satellite operators and draws on experience from the company’s Responsive Space Operations Centres in Australia and the United States.

Saber currently operates 36 tonnes of spacecraft in orbit. That experience helped shape Saber Commander’s focus on faster situational awareness, clearer decision support, reduced manual workload and automation for both routine and off-nominal operations for individual spacecraft and larger constellations.

Saber Astronautics Head of Product Engineering Chris Schuck said the platform was designed to meet the demands of increasingly complex space operations.

“Saber Commander takes everything we learned from our first generation of products and turned it into a platform built for the realities of modern space operations,” Mr Schuck said.

“Larger fleets and increasingly congested orbits demand a smarter approach to mission operations. We designed Commander hand-in-hand with operators to bring automation, commanding, monitoring, and situational awareness together into a single platform that reduces operator workload while giving greater confidence and control.”

Saber Commander is now available to support global spacecraft and constellation operations.
