South Australian engineering and aerospace firm Nova Systems has partnered with a global Earth Observation company to strengthen Australia’s access to advanced satellite imagery and space-based intelligence capabilities.
Nova Systems will tap into the world’s largest constellation of commercial Earth observation satellites, operated by US-founded Earth observation company Planet.
The partnership marks another milestone for Nova Systems, which was founded in Adelaide in 2000 and has grown into an international engineering and technology company with a significant presence across Australia’s defence and space sectors, with offices in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe.
Dean Rosenfield, Nova Systems CEO, said the partnership reflects growing demand for sovereign-aligned space capability and data-driven decision advantage, building on Nova’s extensive experience across both the defence and space sectors.
“This partnership brings together world-leading EO technology with Nova Systems’ deep understanding of Defence and national security,” he said.
“Together with Planet, we are enhancing Australia’s ability to monitor, understand and respond to an increasingly complex strategic environment.”
Planet combines large-scale satellite coverage with artificial intelligence and machine learning to automatically analyse patterns, detect changes, and provide actionable insights at speed.
Through the partnership, Nova Systems and Planet will support the Australian Defence Force and National Intelligence Community with enhanced situational awareness and improved monitoring of land and maritime environments.
The capability will help track infrastructure changes, assess disaster impacts, detect threats early, and improve operational decision-making across defence and national resilience missions.
Nova Systems also operates the Nova Systems Space Precinct at Peterborough in the state’s mid north, delivering satellite communications and mission support, including payload design, modelling, and operations to enhance Australia’s sovereign space capability and global presence.
It has been involved in several of Australia’s major complex defence projects, including the Collins Class submarines and the Land 400 Land Combat Vehicle System.
Planet is a New York Stock Exchange-listed Earth observation company operating the world’s largest commercial constellation of Earth observation satellites.
