At a pivotal time for the state’s space sector, the South Australian Space Industry Centre (SASIC) has appointed Campbell Pegg as its new Director, Space.
The appointment marks a significant step in SASIC’s mission to grow the local space industry and build on the state’s strong history of space activity.
Campbell brings over 15 years of experience in the space industry across five countries, having played a critical role in numerous international and national space missions, and leadership positions across government, commercial and startup sectors.
Campbell’s most recent role was Assistant Director for Satellite Engineering at Optus, and he previously worked in leadership positions at the Australian Space Agency and Fleet Space Technologies, a South Australian startup utilising space technology to support mining exploration.
SASIC Chief Executive Matt Opie said Campbell’s strong background in the space sector and international experience would be an asset to the agency.
“We are thrilled to welcome Campbell to the team. His technical expertise in spacecraft engineering and passion for developing the Australian space sector makes him an ideal leader as we look to capitalise on new technologies while further establishing our industry and capabilities on the global stage,” said Matt.
Speaking about his new appointment, Campbell said he was excited to start the role and was looking forward to building on the success so far.
“South Australians are at the forefront of the national space sector and are absolutely punching above their weight on the world stage when it comes to space,” said Campbell.
“I look forward to supporting the state to harness this capability to support not just economic complexity but also our South Australian way of life.”
Campbell also shared some advice for the next generation of South Australians considering a career in space.
“Like many young Australians who grew up with stars in their eyes, I left Australia to pursue a space career overseas, but now there are incredible space jobs right here in South Australia. I want South Australians to know they can work on cutting-edge space technology to solve our greatest global challenges right here at home.”
SASIC sits within the South Australian Government department, Defence SA. SASIC provides a whole-of-state-government focal point for both local industry and international companies and organisations.
Campbell Pegg lives at West Beach with his two daughters and wife Katherine Bennell-Pegg, who is the first person to qualify as an astronaut under the Australian flag.
