Local space company Southern Launch has successfully supported the launch of an Australian-made rocket from its world-class Koonibba Test Range in regional South Australia.

The mission, conducted in collaboration with Brisbane-based rocket manufacturer AtSpace, further cements South Australia’s position as a national leader in launch capability and paves the way for future collaboration.

As part of the mission, AtSpace’s 12.2-metre tall A01 rocket lifted off from the Koonibba Test Range, soaring close to its target altitude of 80 kilometres – higher than any other Australian commercial rocket has gone before.

The four-and-a-half-minute flight validated AtSpace’s hybrid propulsion technology, before safely returning to Earth as planned.

Southern Launch CEO Lloyd Damp said the spaceport provider was proud to support AtSpace in the development and launch of their innovative A01 rocket technology.

“Conducting these missions at the Koonibba Test Range has allowed AtSpace to accelerate their hybrid propulsion system development,” Mr Damp said.

“Our world-class facility and experienced team at Southern Launch have played a key role in enabling the development of this Australian space industry leader.”

AtSpace Chief Operating Officer Nick Chang said the inaugural launch of the A01 rocket marks a major step forward for Australian-made space technology.

“Our team at AtSpace has been developing our unique hybrid rocket technology for many years,” Mr Chang said. “This successful launch proves that our technology is viable and is a great step forward as we move toward developing our orbital launch vehicles.”

Jointly operated by Southern Launch and the Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation, the Koonibba Test Range is one of the largest commercial testing facilities in the world.

Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson Geraldine Ware said it was a proud moment seeing the community come together to support the mission.

“Over 30 community members contributed their skills and energy throughout the campaign to help this rocket take flight. Witnessing it take to the sky was unforgettable,” Ms Ware said.

The A01 rocket has been recovered from the Koonibba Test Range by helicopter for post-flight analysis.
